The protagonist of Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~, a male 2nd year high school student in Japan, experiences each school day through story events triggered from a board like the one in the screenshot below. Other effects are triggered by landing on the various icons. The layout of icons is randomly generated daily, with some icons appearing more infrequently than others.
There are hundreds of story events already built into the game. While some story events will advance a sub-plot, revealing insights into characters' personalities along the way, other story events provide an opportunity to interact with the characters in more generic ways, such as asking for a phone number. Dialogue choices are regularly presented.
After school, a trip can be made to one of a number of locations where the protagonist can build up one of five attributes, or purchase a gift, or encounter other events. The same locations are used for date spots if a date has been scheduled the previous evening.
In the evening, notes about characters can be reviewed and phone calls made. It's important to stay in frequent contact with a character or else her Heartache Counter will max out, leading to a hefty affection drop. This may not be such a big concern with only the built-in characters to think about, but as new characters are added to the game, players may find themselves struggling to juggle all those relationships.
There's more to the game system that isn't described here. In a nutshell, Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~ is designed to be replayable.
